The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will take place across the length and breadth of the country from March 22, 2024.
Just like the previous season, all 10 captains will be vying to lay their hands on the coveted trophy.
Over the course of the past 16 seasons, as many as 7 different captains have earned the right to come to the podium and lift the IPL trophy.
The first two seasons of the IPL were all about Australian captains as Shane Warne (Rajasthan Royals in 2008) and Adam Gilchrist (Deccan Chargers in 2009) lifted their respective franchises to title glory.
In 2010, MS Dhoni became the first Indian skipper to lift the IPL trophy after the Chennai Super Kings defeated the Mumbai Indians in the summit clash.
Dhoni added another silverware to his kitty in the following season, as CSK successfully defended their crown against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2011 final.
Dhoni and CSK's reign at the top was finally ended by the Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders in the final of the 2012 season.
Gambhir led KKR to another title heist in the 2014 season following a thrilling win over the Punjab Kings" in the summit clash.
Mumbai Indians and Rohit Sharma entered the scene in 2013. Sharma, who was handed the captaincy of MI midway through the season, led the franchise to its maiden title win in the same season- against CSK.
This proved to be a start of a trophy-building dynasty for the Mumbai Indians as the Rohit Sharma-led unit went on to add 4 more titles (2015, 2017, 2019 & 2020) to become the most successful franchise in IPL history.
The Chennai Super Kings have added three more titles to their tally following their comeback in 2018 after a two-year ban due to the spot-fixing saga. An emotional MS Dhoni led his side to their third title in 2018, before doing an encore of it in 2021 after a disastrous 2020 season.
Following a poor 2022, the Super Kings once again fought back in stunning style to claim their fifth IPL title. The heist was sealed by Ravindra Jadeja, who smashed a six and four off the last two deliveries in the final over the summit clash to dash the hopes of Gujarat Titans.
The 2016 season was won by David Warner's SunRisers Hyderabad at the expense of a rampaging Royal Challengers Bangalore while the 2022 edition went to newbies, the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans, which beat inaugural winners Rajasthan Royals in the finals in front of home fans at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
