Representing the national team is a dream for many players. Making their debut a memorable one isn't that easy. But this pacer from Gujarat called Jasprit Bumrah, has had a 'Dream debut' in all the formats of the of the game.
With his unique action and a good pace variation, he has cemented his place in the Indian Cricket team. The fact that he has got the wickets some of the best in his very first game in all the formats, needs to be noted. Let us now look at his Dream Journey.
IPL
He started his IPL journey as a 19-year-old with the Mumbai Indians in 2013. He made his debut in the same season and showed some promise in his bowling with some pace and swing. He grabbed eyeballs with his slingy action and variety in delivering the ball.
He got three wickets for 32 runs in his debut match against RCB on April 4, 2013, at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Virat Kohli was his first ever IPL victim. He followed Kohli's wickets with the wickets of Mayank Agarwal and Karun Nair.
Though he competed in just a couple of games in his debut season, he became only the second bowler in the side to get three wickets on the debut. He was bought again by the Mumbai Indians in 2014 for a massive 1.2 crores and since then there has been no looking back for Bumrah.
He has become one of Mumbai’s death-over specialists. Piking up the wicket of a batsman like Virat is not that easy, especially when you are playing your first match. But this guy has made that look easy by doing it in his very first IPL match. What a way to launch his IPL career!
ODIs
He made his One Day International debut on 27 January 2016 against Australia in Sydney. It was the fifth and final ODI of the series. He finished the match with the figures of two for 40 and was the most economical bowler for MS Dhoni and co.
He intimidated the Australian batsmen with his pace variations and Yorkers. They found it very difficult to predict his deliveries initially. His first ODI wicket was that of Australian captain Steve Smith. Smith got out after scoring just 28 off 37 balls.
Bumrah later dismissed all-rounder James Faulkner with an excellent delivery, for which the batsman had no clue. India won that match by six wickets and it was their only win in the five-match series.
T20Is
He made his T20 debut on January 26, 2016, against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. He finished the match with the figures of three for 23. David Warner was his first T20 victim.
Bumrah then brought up the wickets of James Faulkner and Cameron Boyce. He was India’s most lethal bowler in that match. His was instrumental in restricting the Aussies to 151 and helped India win the match by 37 runs.
Tests
Bumrah had to linger for almost two years to make his Test debut. He was regarded as a limited-overs bowler which hindered his chance of representing India in tests for some time.
He got selected in India’s squad for the ongoing South Africa tour. He made his test debut on January 5, 2018, at the Newlands, Cape Town against the mighty South Africans. He finished the first innings with the figures of one for 73, getting the crucial wicket of AB de Villiers. That was his first ever test wicket.
