Mohammed Shami will miss playing the T20I series in Australia. In the T20Is, which is due to start on January 26, Jasprit Bumrah, a Gujarat pacer is all set to replace the 25-year-old.
The BCCI in a press release said that the Mumbai Indians pacer will leave for Australia on January 22 along with other T20I series members including Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, Suresh Raina and Hardik Pandya.
Bumrah, a regular member of the Mumbai IPL franchise, has taken 14 wickets in nine matches at an average of 15.42 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy. The young bowler boasts an economy rate of 6.23 in the twenty20 tournament.
"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Jasprit Bumrah in the India T20I team as the replacement for Mohammed Shami, who has been ruled out due to injury. The Indian team is scheduled to play three Twenty20 matches starting January 26, 2016," BCCI's secretary Anurag Thakur said in a media statement today.
Bumrah has been on the selectors' mind for quite some time now. The Mumbai Indians bowler finished as the highest wicket-taker in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, as Gujarat emerged national champions.
Shami had suffered the injury during a warm up T20 match against Western Australia. This breakdown could prove a huge setback for Mohammed Shami since he had made his comeback after nine months in the national team.
Shami, who received a hamstring injury was ruled out previously from the ODI series in Australia. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar has replaced the right arm pacer in the ongoing series.
India have already lost the ODI series to the home side. They trail the five match series by three. The men in blue will be looking for making a comeback in the following T2o series.
