A do-or-die match turned out to be all too easy for Sri Lanka, thanks to a massive ton by Jayawardene and Duckworth-Lewis who messed up what was already a lost cause for Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe started the World Cup with a bang, beating Australia and Pakistan, but failed to continue the momentum and play party poopers for Sri Lanka.
Dilshan got out early, but Jayawardene had little problems in his innings of 100 of just 64 balls. The pitch was slow creating problems for all the Sri Lankan batsman except Jayawardene. The Zimbabwe bowlers failed to impress with 3 overs giving away 35 runs.
Zimbabwe’s target was 174 but the rain Gods had other ideas. At the end of the 1st over, the target was reduced to 106 from 11 overs. Sri Lanka had to bowl minimum 5 overs to snare 2 points which they needed, after their heart breaking loss against New Zealand. After the end of 5 overs, Zimbabwe finished at 29 at the loss of 1 wicket, falling short of 14 runs. Sri Lanka managed an easy victory, and Zimbabwe would be left cursing the rain Gods in what could have been a tight contest.
