Jayawardene feted with the MCC Honorary Life Membership

Mahela Jayawardene is now an Honorary Lifetime Member of the MCC

Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene, the country’s second highest Test run-scorer, has been awarded the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Life Membership for his outstanding career. Jayawardene became the 14th Sri Lankan to be feted with such an honour, joining the ranks of Kumar Sangakkara, Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas, amongst his former team-mates.

"Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has awarded former Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene Honorary Life Membership of the Club. Jayawardene's invitation recognises a stellar career in which he played 149 Test matches and scored 11,814 runs at an average of 49.84," the MCC said in a statement.

The Lord’s Honours Boards, that register the names of every international cricketer who scores a Test century, takes five wickets in an innings, or ten wickets in a match, at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, has Jayawardene’s name twice, for his two Test hundreds against England in 2002 and 2006.

Jayawardene acknowledged the honour by saying, “It is an honour to be awarded Honorary Life Membership of MCC. It is a great Club and I'm privileged to now be a part of it.

“I've always enjoyed playing at Lord's, and the MCC Members have always given me a great reception, so to be given this accolade is extra special.

“The Club does brilliant work both in the UK and overseas and I'm delighted to now be a part of it.”

The MCC Committee awards the Honorary Life Membership to cricketers recognising their excellence in the sport, and their contributions to it, often for a very long time. There are over 300 Honorary Life Members of MCC, whereas the total membership of the MCC stands at 18,000.
