The names contained in a sealed envelope handed over to the Supreme Court by the Justice Mukul Mudgal committee is believed to contain names of eight cricketers and a popular commentator according to the DNA’s sources.
The ousted president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), N.Srinivasan, is also one of the 13 people named in the list.
Among the eight cricketers named in the list, three are believed to be currently playing for the Chennai Super Kings with two players each rumoured to be playing for the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Daredevils. The eighth player was a part of the IPL for the first six years but went unsold in the 2014 auctions as per the report.
The Mudgal committee, which was probing the betting and match-fixing allegations that rocked the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League, have however made it clear to the apex court that the allegations made by some of the witnesses who were examined during the course of their investigation were “unverified”. The police teams in Delhi and Mumbai had also provided information to the same effect.
A franchise owner apart from N.Srinivasan, a senior IPL official and a well-known commentator have also been named in the list apart from the players.
“The names of these cricketers are in the public domain. But nobody is actually talking about this leading commentator,” the source told DNA on Tuesday.
Former India player Surinder Khanna didn’t seem surprised at all. “Some of the tainted players who were involved in the 2000 fixing episode are now being allowed to sit in the commentary box. I’m not surprised to hear that a commentator figures on that list,” said Khanna.
The 3-member Mudgal committee said that although the names of other national and international cricketers had come up during the probe, a thorough probe could not be launched due to “paucity of time”.
