67 Kashmiri students of Swami Vivekanand Subharti University (SVSU) in Meerut are facing sedition charges after they allegedly celebrated Pakistan’s victory over India in the recent Asia Cup match.
Controversy
A group of Kashmiri and local students were watching the India-Pakistan match on Sunday in a SVSU hostel, with few Kashmiri students supporting Pakistan and cheering the team, while the locals supported India. After a tense last-over Pakistan victory, situation worsened when there were alleged violent clashes between the two groups. It’s also reported that some students shouted pro-Pakistan slogans after the match.
Dr. Manzoor Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of SVSU, said “he was taken aback by such an unacceptable gesture of a few students.”
“We can’t accept such behaviour from any student,” he added.
“Some students complained that a few students reportedly shouted Pakistan zindabad on way to their rooms,” said Ahmad.
Ahmad said the authorities then decided to send those few Kashmiri students home who supported Pakistan, but had to take action against all 67 students of Kashmir origin residing in the hostel when they refused to reveal names of those handful of ‘wrongdoers’.
“But a three-tier inquiry finally recommended all 67 Kashmiri students residing in Madan Dhingra Hostel be suspended indefinitely because they didn’t reveal the names of the handful of wrongdoers actually involved in creating trouble,” Ahmad said.
“We were expecting the students to apologise. But when that did not happen, we had to suspend them all of them,” the VC said.
Ahmad however, rejected the reports that there was any violent clashes between the students. The University then dropped these students at Ghaziabad and Delhi railway stations under police cover.
Reportedly, there are over 200 students of Kashmir origin enrolled at the University.
Fallout
Despite the suspension, once the University reported the incident to police, with pressure from local politicians, a case of sedition has been registered against ‘unknown students of SVSU’ on Wednesday under section 124 (a) of Indian Penal Code.
“We have registered the case against unknown students and the culprits would be brought into record after investigation,” senior superintendent of police Onkar Singh said.
According to experts, even those students who concealed the names of those involved may face charges under section 124 (b). It also means that now the suspension of those students cannot be revoked.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah fumed on Twitter on the sedition charges on these students and said that this decision will “ruin their future and will further alienate them”.
Abdullah was of the opinion that though the students were in the wrong in shouting pro-Pakistan slogans, criminal charges against them is too harsh a punishment for it. He also said that nobody is legally bound to support a certain team in sports.
