Courtesy their innings and 75 run win against England in Chennai on Tuesday, India maintained their top position in the ICC Test Rankings for Teams, extending their tally to 120 points and thereby increasing the gap between Number 1 and 2 by 15 points.
Their opponents-England- on the other hand, lost 4 rankings points following their 4th consecutive defeat in this series and as a result of that fell three places on the table to Number 5 in the rankings.
Australia are now the new Number 2 Team in the world, followed by Pakistan, who have 102 points to their credit. South Africa are fourth and New Zealand, who are sixth now trail the fifth-placed England by a mere 5 points.
India regained the top ranking from Pakistan after winning the Kolkata Test against New Zealand by 178 runs and since then, have maintained the top position in the rankings with some consistent performances in the subsequent games.
They will finish the year as the numero uno ranked Test side in the world, with the Australia-Pakistan Test series set to extend upto the start of the New Year.
