While the cricketing fraternity appears divided over the ‘Decision Review System,’ ICC finally gives to thumbs up to umpire decision review system. After much criticism , appreciation and discussion this system is come into effect as regular & permanent feature atleast for now starting from ongoing Pak-NZ & Aus-WI test series. In this latest implementation , a team can maximum refer 2 unsuccessfull appeals per innings.
People against it vouch that it led to de-skill the umpires, result in match delays , stengthen the already increasing batsman dominance in game and most importantly make umpire just as a special spectator where he can watch the match right at standing on pitch thereby decreasing both its standards & lucrativty of umpiring profession. Even the cricket boards like BCCI and South Africa opposed its implementation because of heavy cost involved in installing the technology.
But supporter says that DRS is both good for umpires and for the game as it reduces the pressure from umpires and prevent the obivious errors in match.
Where in one incident in Aus-WI match where Chanderpaul was given not out even when referred to third umpire though he clearly seems to have edged to the keeper when sees from tv replays doubts DRS effectiveness . Wherease in another match where DRS was not implemented in Ind-SL 3rd test match dubious Dilshan dismissals in a single match louder the call for the introduction of DRS. These two incidents thereby have provided thrust to voices of both sides. Clearly heat is on both sides.
