The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. After a public falling-out with former captain KL Rahul, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise needed to go through a massive overhaul at the 2025 auction.
While the Super Giants did sign Rishabh Pant for a mammoth amount, they didn't do enough to cover the gaping holes on their roster. And while the management has come out and attempted to do some damage control, it's safe to say that they won't be one of the favorites for the title during the upcoming campaign.
LSG's squad for IPL 2025: Aiden Markram, David Miller, Ayush Badoni, Himmat Singh, Matthew Breetzke, Rishabh Pant, Nicholas Pooran, Aryan Juyal, Abdul Samad, Mitchell Marsh, Shahbaz Ahmed, Yuvraj Chaudhary, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Arshin Kulkarni, Ravi Bishnoi, M Siddharth, Digvesh Singh, Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, Akash Deep, Avesh Khan, Akash Singh, Shamar Joseph, Prince Yadav.
On that note, here is LSG's strongest side, including an impact player, for IPL 2025.
Openers: Rishabh Pant (c&wk) and Mitchell Marsh
The LSG ownership has claimed that Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh will open the batting for the franchise, but that might not be the best route. Rishabh Pant, who is expected to become the team's captain, is best suited to a role at the top of the order in T20 cricket.
Pant opening the batting would also give Marsh a shield against spin, with the left-hander taking down all kinds of bowling while the field restrictions are in place. The Aussie pace-bowling all-rounder, meanwhile, will need to come to terms with the Ekana Stadium, which won't be to his liking.
Matthew Breetzke is another option but could start as a backup, with LSG needing Marsh and Markram's ability to bowl a couple of overs.
Middle order: Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, David Miller, Abdul Samad, Shahbaz Ahmed
Markram could slot in at No. 3, with LSG having virtually no frontline top-order options who can compete with him for a spot in the side. Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni, who were retained ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, will have key roles to play in the middle order.
New signing David Miller will also be at the forefront of Lucknow's plans, with company from Abdul Samad and Shahbaz Ahmed in the finishing department. There are concerns in the middle order, but the Super Giants might just be able to paper over the cracks if their batters come to the party.
Lower order: Mohsin Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav, Avesh Khan
LSG will go in with an all-Indian pace attack in IPL 2025, assuming their lead pacers stay fit. Akash Deep could have to start on the bench, with Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan playing ahead of him. The retained Ravi Bishnoi will be the team's lead spinner again.
