New Zealand opening batsmen Martin Guptill has backed legendary all-rounder Richard Hadlee’s call, for the country to play more Test Cricket.
Richard Hadlee had suggested that New Zealand were not being given international Test cricket as they were not considered an attractive and saleable side.
“It appears our value to other countries is not significant enough to keep us long enough in their country to make decent money. I think there should be some commitment to honour future tour programmes,” Hadlee had said.
The issue has been a talking point in New Zealand especially since the Indian team who are to scheduled to tour the country have been contemplating reducing the Test itinerary from three matches to two.
Martin Guptill has been in tremendous form in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), scoring 198 runs at a healthy average of 33 for the Guyana Amazon Warriors. But has unfortunately been put out of action due to a broken bone in his right hand.
Other cricketers from New Zealand like Ross Taylor and James Franklin have also done well in the CPL, prompting Guptill to urge the international community to take notice of their performances.
“It puts us out there and hopefully people will take notice,” Guptill said, as reported by Cricket Country.
“From what I read, Sir Richard’s comments were more to do with Test cricket than anything else and we are struggling a little in the Test game at the moment.”
“The only way we can get better is by playing more Tests and if that can come in the next few years and we can keep developing as a team then who knows where we can go from there.” he added.
West Indies are due to tour New Zealand later this year, and Guptill has been keeping a close eye on Sunil Narine as he may have a pose a major threat to the their batsmen
“I have been trying to see when he bowls how he does what he does but it is pretty hard to pick it up.” Guptill signed off.
