Martin Guptill became the fastest New Zealand batsman to reach 3000 ODI runs during the third ODI against Sri Lanka at Eden Park, Auckland earlier today. Guptill scored a fluent 66 off 78 balls after New Zealand were asked to bat first by the Sri Lankans and helped the Black Caps reach 145 for 3 in 28.5 overs before the match was abandoned due to rain.
Guptill’s innings was laced with 4 boundaries and 3 sixes as he timed the ball fluently right from the word go and looked set to get a big score before the rain brought a halt to proceedings.
During the course of his innings, the 28-year-old overtook Nathan Astle to become the fastest to reach the 3000-run landmark, having got there in just 90 innings as compared to Astle’s 93.
The 7-match series is currently tied at 1-1 with 4 matches still to play.
