In the limited overs warm-up match between Sri Lanka A and England XI at the SSC in Colombo, Moeen Ali achieved a rare feat by hitting 6 fours in an over.
Batting first, Sri Lanka A laboured to 198/6 in their 43 overs thanks to some useful contribution from lower-order batsmen Jeevan Mendis and Ramith Rambukwella. Chasing 199 for victory, Alastair Cook played out the first over of England’s innings for a maiden.
In the second over, Moeen didn’t take any time to settle down at the crease, taking the attack to young Sri Lankan fast bowler Vishwa Fernando right away. The Englishman started off with a splendid cover drive which travelled to the boundary with ease.
He followed it with a uppish cover drive, which cleared the infield and went to the fence. Then came an on-drive which beat mid-on, followed by two more cover drives, amidst which a wide was bowled. With fine leg brought up into the circle, the 27-year-old glanced the final ball of the over, off his legs for a four to end the over with 25 runs.
England were 145/2 in 25 overs when bad light stopped play, which meant that the visitors won by 56 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method. The English take on Sri Lanka in the first ODI on November 26 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
