Mohammad Azharuddin offered the post of Jammu and Kashmir cricket team coach

Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharrudin

Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) has offered Mohammad Azharuddin, the former Indian captain, the job of coaching the team.

JKCA president Farooq Abdullah offered Azharuddin the post which has been available since Bishan Singh Bedi’s exit at the end of last season.

“We still haven’t reached the final decision,” Abdullah was quoted as saying by a website, according to Times of India.

Azharuddin was banned by the BCCI in 2000 for his involvement in match-fixing, but that decision was overturned last year by the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Azharuddin’s secretary, Mujeeb Khan, said that the former batsman his yet to make up his mind.

“He has been offered the post of coach by JKCA but he hasn’t decided whether to take it or not. They want to avail of whatever services he could render. He is seriously considering it since he is desperate to give back to the game that has been so close to his heart,” Mujeeb said.

Meanwhile, a top BCCI official was quoted as saying that Azharuddin can’t return to cricket in any role without BCCI’s permission since the ruling of the high court has been challenged.

Jammu and Kashmir currently play in the lowest tier, Group C of the Ranji Trophy, where they finished 7th out of 9 teams last season.
