The age-old saying goes, ‘’Catches win matches!’’ can’t be more apt for a format like Twenty20 cricket where every ball is an event. A missed catch has long-term ramifications. Similarly, an extra-ordinary effort in the field has the potential to turn the game into the favor of the fielding team.
Over the course of the last eight editions of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, several players have made game-changing difference for their team by being as safe as a house consistently. Former South African captain AB de Villiers have been the safest player in the history of the showpiece event. The legendary batter tops the charts when it comes to taking the most number of catches. In 25 innings between 2007-16, ABD claimed a record 23 catches.
However, his record is likely to be broken in the upcoming edition, as Australian opener David Warner is just 3 catches away from being the leading catch-taker in T20 World Cup’s history. The 36-year-old has thus far taken 21 catches in 34 innings.
Another Australian, in the form of all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, is in the top five list. The 2021 World Cup-winner has taken 16 catches in 24 outings, and he is followed by Rohit Sharma, who has taken 16 in 39 appearances.
The top five is bookended by another player who will feature in T20 World Cup 2024, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson. The top-order batter has pouched 15 catches in 25 outings.
