A consistent top-order batsman who can change gears as per the match situation is a boon for any side in the shortest format of the game. Not only do these batsmen help their side get a headstart more-often-than-not, their ability to stay for long allows other batsmen to play their natural game.
Over the course of the last eight editions of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, there have been batsmen from all around the world who have showcased the above mentioned qualities on a consistent basis.
Sri Lankan icon Mahela Jayawardene holds the record for scoring most consecutive 50s. The elegant right-handed batsman was at the height of his powers during the 2010 edition of the T20 World Cup as he racked up scores of 81 (51) vs. New Zealand, 100 (64) vs. Zimbabwe, and 98 (56) vs. West Indies to become the first player to rack up a hat-trick of 50+ scores.
Indian run-machine Virat Kohli took the T20 World Cup by the scruff of its neck in 2014, and he has been dominating the showpiece event ever since.
The two-time Player of the Tournament winner, Kohli, showcased his genius for the first time in a showpiece event during a record-breaking 2014 season, where he racked up 319 runs, which included two consecutive 50s— 54 (41) vs. West Indies & 57* (50) vs. Bangladesh.
Other batsmen who have scored consecutive 50+ runs in T20 WC include Yuvraj Singh (vs. England & Australia, 2007), Matthew Hayden (vs. Sri Lanka & India, 2007), Kevin Pietersen (vs. Pakistan & South Africa, 2010), Rohit Sharma (vs. West Indies & Bangladesh, 2014), Gautam Gambhir (vs. New Zealand & England 2007), T Dilshan (vs. Australia & West Indies, 2009), and Chris Gayle (vs. Australia & England, 2012).
