The legendary Virat Kohli holds the record for the most Player of the Match awards in history of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The Indian legend has bagged the award on seven instances in just 27 matches.
Kohli has been the most consistent performer across all teams in the marquee event. The former Indian captain is the only player to bag two Player of the Tournament awards in T20 World Cups (2014 and 2016). The 35-year-old played inarguably the greatest knock in the tournament’s history in the previous edition when he smashed an unbeaten 82*(51) against arch-rivals Pakistan to take his side home in front of 90,000+ fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The Indian legend will look to add a few more POTM awards to his tally in the forthcoming event.
Coming back to the list, the second-place is stacked with three world-class performers in the form of Chris Gayle, Shane Watson, and Mahela Jayawardene. Each of the three individuals have won five Player of the Match awards in T20 World Cups.
Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson took just 22 matches to win five awards, while Gayle and Mahela took 33 and 31 respectively.
Former Proteas captain AB de Villiers, former Sri Lankan opener T Dilshan, and T20 World Cup-winning Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi have won four apiece in 30, 35, and 34 matches respectively.
