MS Dhoni becomes 11th Indian to score 1000 Test runs against England

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni went past 1000 Test runs against England in the fourth Test match at Old Trafford. The 33-year-old’s innings of 71 in his team’s score of 152, enabled him to become only the 11th Indian to reach the landmark.

The wicket-keeper batsman scored his 32nd Test fifty in the process equalling the all-time record of most 50+ scores against England in England (7) as a keeper. With 669 runs, the right-hander is third in the list of most Test runs as a stumper in England.

The skipper stood strong amongst the ruins on day 1 of the Test match that saw India lose its first four wickets with just 4 runs taken off the bat. Dhoni did his best to hold the innings together with two 50+ partnerships in the company of Ajinkya Rahane (24) and Ravichandran Ashwin (40).

The man from Ranchi, in his gritty knock, took some calculated risks that gave some respectability to the Indian scorecard. Only 3 batsmen reached double digits in an innings that equalled the most number of ducks in Test history. India now share this unwanted record with Pakistan, South Africa and Bangladesh.

Dhoni now - with 7 half-centuries in England - holds the record the most 50s for a non-English wicket-keeper in the country. South Africa’s John Waite with a century and 6 fifties is the only other keeper to have 7 50+ innings to his name in England.
