When India were performing poorly in Test cricket away from home, a lot of fans across the country wanted the board to sack the skipper. But, the players in the squad then were either former captains who already gave up captaincy to concentrate on their game or youngsters who were finding their feet at the top level.

Dhoni continued to lead the team in Tests and when Virat Kohli became mature, Dhoni called it a day from the longer format after the completion of the third Test against Australia in Melbourne in 2015. No one saw this coming, especially in the middle of a four-match series.
