Eoin Morgan: steers England to victory

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat first. The opening pair of Shane Watson and Tim Paine could not establish themselves at the crease for long. Watson fell to a caught and bowled delivery of Stuart Broad, followed by Tim Paine’s dismissal off Luke Wright. Skipper Ponting too could not hold on for long. Michael Clarke displayed his class as he remained not out at 87. The others got starts but could not convert them into big scores, as wickets fell at regular intervals. Tail-ender James Hopes managed to hang in there and support Clarke with a decent 34 off 38 balls. Nathan Hauritz too, made a handful of runs. The Australian team, thus got a total of 267 runs at the loss of 7 wickets in 50 overs.

England came out to bat with a positive mindset and started off with a flyer, Craig Kieswetter scoring an impressive 38 (6 fours, 1 six). Captain Strauss fell early and so did Kevin Pietersen. Australia thought they were in control when Collingwood with the hosts 4 wickets down for 97, but their illusion didn’t last long. It was then that Eoin Morgan showed his capability with a brilliant unbeaten knock of 103 runs off 85 deliveries with 16 fours. His century along with some support from Luke Wright and Tim Bresnan took England to a comfortable victory by 4 wickets, leaving Australia disappointed with the result.

Ever since the Englishmen defeated the might of the Australians in the T20 World Cup, they have been on a high. The team looks stronger now, along with newer generation players emerging with a pool of tremendous potential and talent. This Series has a huge role to play for both the teams as it is the preceding event to the Ashes, which gets underway in November. It’s not merely a game of cricket between these two sides, but a rivalry that is considered to be the oldest in the world of cricket. For Australia, the defeat at the T20 World Cup was hard to digest as England convincingly outsmarted them with commendable performances. They will now certainly look for vengeance in their forthcoming encounters.
