Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary has revealed the reason he called head coach Gautam Gambhir a 'hypocrite.' Tiwary remarked that Gambhir criticizes overseas players for making money and enjoying themselves, yet hires them for the national team.
The 43-year-old succeeded Rahul Dravid in the role following the Men in Blue's victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 and hired Ryan Ten Doeschate (assistant coach) and Morne Morkel (bowling coach), based on his stints with them in the IPL. However, his decision to rope them in hasn't paid off, as Team India haven't produced the results expected of them.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, here's the explanation offered by the 39-year-old behind calling out Gambhir:
"Why did I call him a hypocrite? It is because of one of his interviews if you remember. In one of the interviews, he said, ‘All these foreign coaches, all the guys who come from abroad, have no emotions, they have no feelings. They earn money and enjoy themselves.’"
"When the time was there for him to select all the Indian coaches and all the Indian-origin support staff, why did he put forward the names of Ryan ten Doeschate and Morne Morkel? He got everything he wanted but he is not able to produce the results. Actions don't match his words, so I called him a hypocrite," he added.
Tiwary was part of Gambhir's setup when the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lifted the IPL trophy in 2012 by beating the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final. It was the Bengal cricketer who hit the winning runs.
"The results are there to be seen" - Manoj Tiwary on Gautam Gambhir's coaching tenure
Tiwary added that home defeats like the one to New Zealand are unacceptable and accused Gambhir of even failing to look at the reasons behind the failures. In the same interview, he added:
"The results are there to be seen. When you lose three series in your short tenure, you have lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and, most importantly, you lost the home series against New Zealand. It was a big loss, as this had never happened before. A lot of things speak for themselves. Losing to New Zealand in a home series is not acceptable at all."
"In your short career, you also lost the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Winning and losing are part of the game, but results speak for themselves. You need to look at the reasons behind these losses," he said.
The Indian team will now turn their attention to the limited-overs leg against England, beginning on January 22.
