Australian pacer Jhye Richardson faces another lengthy period on the sidelines as he has opted for shoulder surgery following an injury he sustained in November 2024. The right-arm seamer has targeted a return to international cricket during the home Ashes series later this year.
The injury occurred during a Sheffield Shield fixture as Richardson was giving high five to a teammate while celebrating a wicket. The 28-year-old has played five matches for the Perth Scorchers in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 season but will be unavailable for the remainder of the matches.
In a press release, Richardson said his ability on the field has been quite limited in the past few years due to his shoulder and stated, as quoted by ICC:
"After careful consideration and many discussions with my medical team, I've made the decision to undergo shoulder surgery to improve stability and reduce the risk of future injury. For the past few years, I have been limited by my shoulder in the field and know how increasingly important it is to be capable to back up my teammates."
The West Australian hopes to return strongly by investing his everything in the rehab process.
"The timing of the surgery is crucial to ensure I have the best possible build up, including Shield cricket leading into next summer. I'll be giving everything I've got to the rehab process, determined to come back as the best version of myself. Thanks for all the support, and I can't wait to be back stronger for summer 2025/2026!"
Richardson played only one Sheffield Shield fixture in the 2024/25 season, picking up four wickets. In 26 first-class fixtures, he has claimed 110 scalps at 20.95.
Jhye Richardson was part of Australia's squad for last two Tests against India
The 28-year-old, meanwhile, was part of the national team's Test squad for the fourth and fifth game of the series as a backup pacer. Australia had also considered bringing him in for the fifth and final Test but decided against it.
Overall, the right-arm seamer has featured in three Tests, 15 ODIs and 18 T20Is, taking 57 scalps and last played international cricket in June 2022 against Sri Lanka.
