Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan and other officials supportive of the ousted Awami League government have fled the country for their safety amid the ongoing political unrest, according to Cricbuzz. The country's sports minister Zahid Ahsan Hasan has also left.
The board has been forced to delay the Bangladesh A team's departure to Pakistan for an upcoming tour by two days due to the ongoing political unrest in the country. The team, which included senior players like Mushfiqur Rahim, Mominul Haque, Shahadat Hossain, and Zakir Hasan, were scheduled to leave on Tuesday, August 6, to play two four-day and three one-day matches against Pakistan A.
"The Bangladesh A Team's departure for Pakistan has been delayed by at least 48 hours due to unavoidable circumstances. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is in constant communication with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) regarding the A Team's tour," the BCB said in a statement on Tuesday.
Bangladesh has been in turmoil for the past many weeks due to massive protests against job quotas for descendants of freedom fighters. These protests recently turned violent and a police crackdown led to hundreds of deaths.
It culminated in an ambush at long-serving President Sheikh Hasina's house, her resignation, and fleeing to India. The Army has taken over the country's reins.
Remaining board monitoring situation ahead of Bangladesh's cricketing assignments
The remaining BCB officials are also taking it one day at a time in analysing the next steps for their teams which are scheduled to play a two-Test series against Pakistan from August 21 and then host the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup.
"We will see the situation for the next two days and later take a decision on our next course of action as far preparation of the national team for the Pakistan tour is concerned," a BCB official told Cricbuzz.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has also said it is monitoring the situation while keeping the safety of the players as the priority.
