The BCCI have officially appointed Devajit Saikia as the board's acting secretary. Saikia replaces Jay Shah, who began his tenure as the new ICC Chairman on December 1.
Shah was first elected as the BCCI secretary in October 2019, and was then re-elected three years later in October 2022. The 36-year-old also served as the president of the Asian Cricket Council from January 2021 to December 2024 before being succeeded by Shammi Silva.
Devajit Saikia, a former wicketkeeper batter, represented Assam in four first-class matches, scoring 53 runs. He also registered eight catches and a solitary stumping.
He was previously the vice president of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) for a two-year period from 2016 to 2018 before serving as the secretary of the state's board.
"I am confident you will perform the duties to the best of your abilities and with aplomb" - BCCI President Roger Binny
The current BCCI acting secretary, Devajit Saikia is also the Advocate General of Assam and was recently appointed as the board director of the ICC. Meanwhile president Roger Binny, under BCCI rules and regulations, used his constitutional powers to appoint Saikia as the acting board secretary.
Binny cited clause 7(1) (d) of the BCCI constitution in a letter addressed to Saikia to hand secretarial powers. The 1983 World Cup winner also exuded confidence in Saikia's ability to perform well in his new role. He wrote (via ESPNCricinfo):
"The president shall in the event of vacancy or indisposition shall delegate the functions to another office bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up or indisposition ceases. Accordingly, I delegate the functions of secretary to you till the post is filled up by processes laid down as per BCCI rules and regulations. I am confident you will perform the duties to the best of your abilities and with aplomb."
