The fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 between India and Australia commenced on Friday (January 3) at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Leading the five-match series by 2-1, the hosts dominated the opening day of the final Test with a brilliant bowling performance.
After opting to bat first on a green surface, India got off to a poor start as they lost both openers KL Rahul (4) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) inside eight overs, with just 17 runs on the board. Shubman Gill (20) and Virat Kohli (17) then got starts but fell without converting them, leaving their side in trouble at 72/4.
Rishabh Pant shed his natural aggressive game and played watchfully, taking multiple blows on the body en route to 40 (98) before his patience ran out. He perished in the 57th over, trying to attack a short ball from Scott Boland. Ravindra Jadeja (26) and Jasprit Bumrah (22) chipped in with some runs in the end to take India to 185 in the first innings. Australia then scored nine runs for the loss of a wicket in three overs before stumps on Day 1.

"I haven’t seen so much grass on a Sydney pitch in the past" - Sunil Gavaskar on the pitch used for the 5th India vs Australia BGT 2024-25 Test
Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar took shots at people raising concerns about turning pitches in India by highlighting the amount of grass on the Sydney pitch used for the BGT series finale. Speaking to Star Sports on the matter, Gavaskar said (via India Today):
"Justin Langer, who's played in Australia, has said he's never seen so much grass on a pitch. But what you would have noticed is that no former Indian player has complained or whined about it.
"If a pitch in India is bereft of grass and looks like it's going to turn, so many former players from different parts of the world criticize our pitches. But former Indian players rarely complain because we understand the importance of adapting to overseas conditions."
He added:
"I haven’t seen so much grass on a Sydney pitch in the past. Probably, the grass cover is on the higher side compared to other pitches in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The batting is tough, and the visiting batters are not able to connect the bat with the ball. Cows would have grazed confidently on the pitch in Sydney."
