Former Australian coach Darren Lehmann took to his official X account to reply to a user who shared an abusive post over the sandpaper controversy that the Australians were involved in.
The user, in his post, put up a video of the controversy that erupted during the third Test between South Africa and Australia in 2018 in Cape Town. Lehmann, who was the head coach of the Aussies at the time, stepped down after the fourth Test of the series.
Lehmann was thought to have been involved in the sandpaper controversy along with a few other players. However, he was cleared of all accusations later on as the investigation was carried out.
The user, referring to Lehmann, abused him in his post, writing that all the players involved in the controversy learned it from him and tagged the former Australian coach as well. The post did not sit well with Lehmann, who also replied to the tweet in an abusive manner.
"Bye bye moron," Lehmann replied to the post he was tagged in.
What was the sandpaper controversy during the South Africa vs Australia third Test in 2018?
The sandpaper incident that occurred during the third Test between South Africa and Australia in 2018 involved Cameron Bancroft rubbing the ball with a yellow sandpaper. He attempted to alter the condition of the ball, which essentially accounts for ball tampering.
Bancroft was caught on television as the controversy came to light. He was also found hiding the object when he realized he was being shown on the big screen. Shockingly, Steve Smith, who was Australian captain at the time, and David Warner, were also aware and involved in the controversy.
As a result, all three - Bancroft, Smith, and Warner were charged and suspended. The incident came as one of Australia's darkest moments in their cricketing history.
