Indian skipper Rohit Sharma continued his dismal Test form with another low score on the final day of the Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne. The 37-year-old displayed some grit against the new ball but eventually fell to his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins for a 40-ball nine.
Rohit has totaled just 31 runs in five innings thus far in the series at an average of 6.20. The veteran batter has scored only 164 runs in his last 15 Test innings at an average of under 11 with a lone half-century.
The latest failure also took Rohit's Test average in Australia to under 25 with only three half-centuries in 19 innings. The questions that were already growing about Rohit's place in the Test side have multi-folded after this outing.
Fans on X were in no mood to spare Rohit from criticism and shared their thoughts with the following reactions:
Fans continued slamming Rohit for another low score with one saying:
"Rohit has destroyed himself, KL Rahul and Team India. Well done champ."
"Rohit for just to bring his form back. Rettled the Indian batting order by coming to opening. Just pathetic. India is 2 down," tweeted a fan.
"The consistency man. 9(40). Forget converting 50s into 100s, this man is failing to convert his single digit scores to double digits. Can’t bat, can’t field, can’t lead, can’t stay fit. Rohit Sharma please retire," a fan said.
Team India in trouble after Rohit Sharma's early dismissal in the Boxing Day Test
After dislodging the final Australian pair right away on Day 5, India were left to chase 340 in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne. The visitors began solidly at 25/0 in 16 overs before Rohit's dismissal.
The skipper's departure led to the in-form KL Rahul also walking back to the pavilion in the same Cummins over for a five-ball duck. The back-to-back dismissals left India reeling at 25/2 in 17 overs with another 315 runs still required.
India have enjoyed tremendous success in Tests at Melbourne recently, winning their last two matches in 2018 and 2020. With the five-match series tied at 1-1, the winner of this contest will take an unassailable 2-1 lead.
History was always against India, with the highest-ever successful run-chase at the MCG in Tests being 332 way back in 1928.
Following the double-wicket over, India suffered another blow at the stroke of Lunch as Virat Kohli gave away his wicket to Mitchell Starc. The visitors are now left stranded at 33/3.
