Australian all-rounder Beau Webster has disclosed that his Instagram followers did not grow overnight like Sam Konstas, although both players made their Test debuts in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series. Webster gave two reasons behind Konstas' incredible growth in Instagram followers — his reverse ramp against Jasprit Bumrah and the shoulder barge incident with Virat Kohli.
Speaking on Willow Talk after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, Webster spoke about a range of topics. One of them was his teammate Konstas' Instagram followers increasing by 30,000% after his debut at the MCG.
When asked if he has witnessed a similar growth after scoring the winning runs in the final Test, Webster replied:
"Certainly don't have 200,000. I think the reverse ramping on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test and the confrontation with Virat were the two catalysts that shot him up 200k. But no, the Instagram following certainly increased but not to that scale. He's an overnight sensation." [1:28.43 onwards]
During the same interview, Beau Webster shed light on how he got an opportunity to hit the winning shot in the Sydney Test against India. Webster smashed Washington Sundar for two boundaries to help Australia secure a six-wicket win.
"It was like a fairytale. We needed 8 to win and I managed to backfoot punch for a four and then there were two balls left and I thought I don't think I am ever going to get another chance here to win a game with a boundary for the country in a fifth and deciding Test, so I run down the wicket, initially I was trying to hit it for a six and it actually dropped a little bit on me shorter, but still managed to get a good piece of it through mid-off," Webster said.
Playing his debut Test, Webster scored a quickfire 34-ball 39 in the second innings to ensure Australia chased down the 162-run target with six wickets in hand.
"I don't know if it's a long-standing tradition or Heady has made it up"- Beau Webster says he had to sing a song after his Test debut
Beau Webster further shared the details of the Australian team's celebration after winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series 2024-25. The debutant had to sing a song, following the tradition set by Travis Head for newcomers who win their first Test with the Australian team.
"I don't know if it's a long-standing tradition or Heady has made it up in the last couple of games. He told me if you win your 1st Test, or whenever you win your 1st Test, you have to sing a song in the middle of all staff members and players," Webster said.
"Sam (Konstas) sang Sweet Caroline at MCG, Nathan (McSweeney) did it as well at Adelaide," he concluded.
Beau Webster had a memorable debut at the SCG. It will be interesting to see if he can continue in the same vein for the Australian Test team.
