Two pillars of the Indian team, Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma, will be back in action during the home series against Bangladesh. India will host their neighbors for two Tests before playing three T20Is. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma having retired from T20Is, they will feature only in the Test series.
The first Test will be played in Chennai, beginning Thursday, September 19, while Kanpur will host the second Test from September 27. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two of India's most experienced batters, will have an important role to play as the two Tests are a part of the World Test Championship.
Rohit Sharma has played 59 Tests, 265 ODIs, and 159 T20Is, scoring 4137, 10866, and 4231 runs in the respective formats. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has featured in 113 Tests, 295 ODIs and 125 T20Is. Kohli has 8848 Test runs, 13906 ODI runs, and 4188 T20I runs in his career.
Looking at their records against Bangladesh, Rohit has played a total of 33 games against Bangladesh across all formats. On the other hand, Virat Kohli has played 28 matches across all formats against Bangladesh.
Rohit Sharma's stats in international cricket vs Bangladesh
Interestingly, Rohit has played only three Test matches against Bangladesh in his career so far. He managed only 33 runs from three innings at an average of 11 and a high-score of 21. The right-hander first played a Test against Bangladesh back in 2015 at Fatullah, where he scored only six runs. His other two Tests against Bangladesh came in 2019.
In ODIs, however, Rohit has played 17 games against Bangladesh. From 17 innings, he has 786 runs at an average of 56.14 and a strike-rate of 97.27, registering three hundreds and as many fifties as well. His best ODI performance against Bangladesh came during the 2015 ODI World Cup, where Rohit slammed a 126-ball 137. His century helped India edge past Bangladesh in the quarter-final.
His other century against them in ODIs also came in an ICC event, the Champions Trophy in England in 2017, once again in a knock-out game (semi-final). His unbeaten 123 helped India chase down a 265-run target with ease. The 2019 ODI World Cup saw Rohit slam his third ton against Bangladesh in the format, where he scored a 92-ball 104 that set the tone for India's victory.
The 2024 T20 World Cup-winning captain has played 13 T20Is against Bangladesh, scoring 477 runs, averaging 36.69 with a strike-rate of 143.67. Rohit has five half-centuries against the neighbors in the format. His highest score of 89 against Bangladesh in T20Is came during the 2019 Nidahas Tri-series in Colombo. He also has fifties against them in big events such as the 56 that he scored against them in the 2014 World T20 and 83 during the Men's T20 Asia Cup in 2016.
Virat Kohli's stats in international cricket vs Bangladesh
Virat Kohli has faced Bangladesh in six Tests so far, playing nine innings, and racking up 437 runs with an average of 54.62 with two hundreds as well. One out of his seven double hundreds in Tests has also come against Bangladesh. He scored 204 against them in Hyderabad in 2017. His other ton against them in the format came in 2019 when he scored 136 in the second Test at Eden Gardens.
Coming to ODIs, Virat has played 16 games against Bangladesh in his career. He has been impressive with 910 runs at an average of 75.83, strike-rate of 101.78 to go with five hundreds and three fifties.
His maiden ODI ton against Bangladesh came in 2010 where he struck an unbeaten 102 in Mirpur and also won the 'Player of the Match'. Virat has registered ODI tons against Bangladesh on big occasions as well.
In his first ODI World Cup for India in 2011, Virat announced his arrival on the big stage. Playing at Mirpur, India put up a massive total of 370/4 batting first. A young Virat struck a magnificent unbeaten 83-ball 100. His highest score against Bangladesh in the format, 136, came during the 2014 Asia Cup.
After going through a lean patch and some struggle post 2019, Kohli scripted a brilliant comeback. He registered two more ODI hundreds against Bangladesh, 113 in 2022 and 103* during their ICC World Cup clash in 2023 at Pune.
The former Indian skipper has a formidable record against Bangladesh in the shortest format as well. Virat Kohli has played six T20Is against them, scoring 230 runs at an average of 76.66. He has two half-centuries against Bangladesh in this format, both of which have come in T20 World Cups.
The first of the two came during the 2014 World T20, where he scored an unbeaten 57 to help India win the contest. The other half-century came more recently, during the 2022 T20 World Cup, where he struck an unbeaten 64 off 44 balls at Adelaide.
