Sydney Thunder batter Cameron Bancroft's Big Bash League (BBL) season is believed to be over after sustaining a broken shoulder following a sickening collision with teammate Daniel Sams against Perth Scorchers. Both players were stretchered off to the hospital after their mishap while going for a catch at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Friday, January 3.

Bancroft and Sams are both still admitted after they were confirmed to have concussions. While Bancroft's campaign has ended due to the concussion and injuries to his shoulder and nose, Sams is expected to be out for around two weeks.

"Cameron Bancroft's BBL season is over after the Sydney Thunder opener suffered a broken shoulder in his horror collision with teammate Daniel Sams," Cricket Australia's statement read.

Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland said (via cricket.com.au):

"Both players were in good spirits and well looked after last year. The Perth Scorchers and the medical staff on the ground and the hospital staff were incredible all through the night. Big thanks from me and the Thunder and both players and their families."
"Two incredibly tough individuals as well. Talk to anyone about Cameron Bancroft and how he plays the game and what he is made of. He is tough stuff. Bangers was watching the game last night and watched every ball right to the conclusion," he added

Bancroft had recorded one fifty in four innings in the BBL 2024-25 season after missing out on the opening spot in the Australian Test team. Sams, on the other hand, scored a match-winning 42 in the Thunder's season opener against the Adelaide Strikers.

Sydney Thunder recorded a last-ball win over Scorchers to go second on the BBL table

The collision between Bancroft and Sams resulted in Sydney Thunder going for concussion substitutes in Ollie Davies and Hugh Weibgen. Handed a 178-run target by the Scorchers, skipper David Warner led the way with 49 runs off 33 deliveries.

An unwell Ollie Davies could only chip in with 3 runs off eight deliveries. Weibgen, on the other hand, was unbeaten on 9 off six deliveries, hitting a crucial boundary to finish the penultimate over.

With 15 runs needed off the last six balls, Sherfane Rutherford struck three boundaries, including one off the final ball to help the Thunder clinch a four-wicket win.
