Hosts Australia and India were involved in intense action on the first day of the fourth Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test in Melbourne. There were some heated moments between players as well, adding to the spice and excitement of the BGT.
The crowd was certainly entertained on the day and came out in large numbers to get behind their respective teams. While a massive crowd is always expected when Australia and India play, particularly in the BGT, the attendance on the opening day of the ongoing Boxing Day Test went over the roof, setting a new record.
The turnout at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on the first day was incredible, shattering the attendance record between India v Australia Tests Down Under. According to ABC Sport, as many as 87,242 fans attended the opening day at the MCG.
Australia on top after Day 1 of 4th BGT 2024-25 Test
Australia won the toss and opted to bat first on Day 1 of the ongoing fourth BGT 2024-25 Test in Melbourne. Openers Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja set the tone with an 89-run stand for the opening wicket.
19-year-old Konstas scored a fifty on debut, making 60 runs off 65 deliveries. Khawaja also got to 57 off 121 balls while Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith scored fifties as well.
Labuschagne was dismissed for 72 off 145 balls while Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 68. All of Australia's top four batters scored half-centuries, which comes as a huge relief as their top order was under some pressure to deliver.
While India did manage to pick up some wickets toward the end of play and fightback, the hosts went past the 300-run mark, ending the day on 311/6. That said, they certainly appear to be on top at the moment and will aim to carry the momentum forward on Day 2.
