The Indian cricket team did not have a bright start to the fifth Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test in Sydney. On the opening day (Friday, January 3), the visitors struggled once again with the bat, being bundled out for a low total.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, India were cleaned up for just 185 runs in the first innings. Both the openers were dismissed cheaply first up. Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) and KL Rahul (4) failed to build a platform up front.
Shubman Gill, returning for this Test, was also out for 20 before Virat Kohli (17) followed him back to the hut. Rishabh Pant (40) and Ravindra Jadeja (26) did provide some resistance but did not last long enough either.
Thanks to captain Jasprit Bumrah's crucial 22-run knock, India managed to get 185 in the end. Australia thoroughly dominated with the ball on the opening day, stamping their authority over the visitors.
After the poor batting display from the visitors, fans expressed their disappointment on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), trolling the team.
One fan said that the Indian team has gone back to what it was a couple of decades ago. Referring to the top-order collapse, the fan even questioned the team's preparation before a game.
"#INDvsAUSTest Indian cricket has now gone back to what it was two decades ago. The top order collapses often and it is left to the tail to over exert themselves to try and save the match. Do these guys never practise before a match???," the tweet read.
Another user took a dig at the head coach Gautam Gambhir. The fan stated that the batters play with fear due to the constant changes happening in the side. Further, the fan added that Gambhir does not have the clarity of how to manage the team.
"Change is constant in GG era. Itne changes karenge ki batsmen dar dar ke khelenge. . Runs nahi banenge. Sense of security nahi rahegi. Clearly Gautam Gambhir doesn't have clarity of how to manage team. Changes are constant Stupid Stupid Stupid #INDvsAUSTest #AUSvIND," the user tweeted.
Virat Kohli was dismissed once again chasing the ball outside off-stump only to edge it behind. A user trolled the former Indian skipper, calling his batting 'Stupid'.
"Everytime when outside the off stump ball came. Virat Kohli ready to play. Such a Stupid stupid stupid batting 😡. #ViratKohli𓃵 #ViratKohli #Virat #Kohli #AUSvIND #INDvsAUS #chokli #bordergavaskartrophy2024 #INDvsAUSTest.
While the top-order failed to score, Bumrah's crucial 22 gave the visitors some additional runs. A user trolled the side, stating that Bumrah has to bat, bowl, field, and even captain the team.
"Poor Bumrah should bat, ball, field, and captain this team. #INDvsAUSTest #Bumrah," the tweet read.
Another user trolled the team, stating that fans can be saved by this torture only if GST is imposed on watching cricket.
"Only she can save us #INDvsAUSTest #AUSvIND #INDvsAUS," the user wrote putting up a picture, as can be seen below.
Below are some other tweets from fans on X -
"How many times will Sunil Gavaskar say "Stupid Stupid Stupid" seeing this Pathetic Performance of Indian Team?? #INDvsAUSTest #AUSvINDIA #INDvAUS," a user wrote.
"If the Indian team's situation continues like this, Bumrah might be the first to announce his retirement. DSP Siraj NOT OUT #INDvsAUSTest #AUSvIND #retirement," another user tweeted.
"Dear Australian cricket, atleast gotiya to mat todo. #INDvsAUSTest," wrote another fan.
Can India bounce back on Day 2 in Sydney?
The visitors were bowled out for just 185 runs on the opening day as their struggles as a batting unit continued. They did manage to pick up the wicket of Usman Khawaja right at the stroke of stumps, with Bumrah striking.
However, Australia, who trail by 176 runs with nine wickets intact, are on top at the moment. The hosts dominated with the ball and put India on the back foot early on in the game once again.
For the visitors to give themselves a chance to come back in this contest, they will need to bowl Australia out as quickly as possible on Day 2. Bumrah, who has been the best bowler for the visitors in this series, will need support from the other pacers as well.
