Former Australia player and head coach Darren Lehmann opined that Yashasvi Jaiswal was responsible for his run-out dismissal on Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. The youngster was involved in a major mix-up with Virat Kohli towards the end of the day's play to depart for 82 runs off 118 deliveries, after being stranded at one end of the pitch.
Jaiswal had a rush of blood after driving the ball to mid-on and attempting a quick single. Kohli, however, did not anticipate the run because of how unlikely it was and traced the ball's path instead. By the time he reacted at the non-striker's end, Jaiswal was well past the point of recovery.
The entire incident sparked a debate among fans and pundits as to who was at fault for the needless dismissal. Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon was asked for his thoughts at the end of the day's play, and he labeled the entire episode as a classic mix-up, stating that Kohli left Jaiswal out to dry in the middle.
"It was probably one of the best barbecues I've seen. It came out of the blue. They were doing it pretty easy out there. I know pressure does funny things, and we were able to build that little bit of pressure – that's what it felt like, anyway. Silly run-outs are coach killers, aren't they?" Nathan Lyon told ABC Sport (via Hindustan Times)
Darren Lehmann, however, felt that Kohli was not at fault. He opined that Jaiswal had a brain fade after he chose to run for a shot that was hit straight at the fielder.
"I don't know what sort of barbecue Nathan Lyon's talking about. I actually think Jaiswal was at fault. He hit it straight to Patty Cummins who's one of the best fielders going around in the world for a fast bowler. It went straight to him at pace, and he just took off. He just had a bit of a brain fade, the young fella," Lehmann said on ABC Sport during commentary
"There was no run. He hit it straight to him, unless I'm watching something different. He was batting beautifully, and if they got through that 25 minutes, it's a whole different ballgame today," he added
The run-out triggered a collapse as India lost their way from 153-2 to end the day on 164-5. Kohli was dismissed for 36 off the very next over after Jaiswal's departure.
"I think the young fella just got overawed by the moment" - Darren Lehmann on Yashasvi Jaiswal
Jaiswal had made the most of a brilliant batting strip to end his string of poor scores. The left-handed batter looked in ominous touch, and was well on course for his second hundred in the series, before his self-inflicted, ill-fated run-out.
"I think the young fella just got overawed by the moment because the pressure was building. He knew if they got through the 25 minutes he could be 100 either last night or early this morning," Lehmann further stated
India have recovered from their stumble on Day 2 to not only avoid the follow-on but also inch closer to Australia's first-innings score.
