South Africa beat England by seven runs in the 45th match of the 2024 T20 World Cup on Friday (June 21), resulting in a meme-fest by fans. The Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia, hosted the clash. The Proteas team inched closer to sealing a semi-final spot with their second consecutive win in the Super 8 stage.

South Africa batted first in the contest after losing the toss. Quinton de Kock (65) and David Miller (43) played brilliant knocks on a tricky surface, helping their side notch up a respectable total of 163/6 in 20 overs. Jofra Archer scalped three wickets but was expensive as he conceded 40 runs in his 4-over spell.

In reply, England got off to a sedate start and found themselves in trouble with 61/4 after 10.2 overs. South Africa were in the driver's seat at that juncture. Harry Brook (53) and Liam Livingston (33) played aggressive knocks, reigniting England's hopes. However, South African pacers held their nerves in the end and restricted the opponents to 156/6.

"I think it is still a good wicket and we were happy chasing 160" - England captain Jos Buttler after loss vs South Africa in 2024 T20 World Cup

At the post-match presentation, English skipper Jos Buttler reflected on the loss to South Africa, saying (via ESPNCricinfo)

"I will say we lost it in the powerplay. Quinton de Kock came out and played a brilliant knock and we couldn't quite match that. I think it is still a good wicket and we were happy chasing 160. Quinney batted superbly and at one stage we looked favourites when Brook and Livingstone were going great guns."

Buttler continued:

"The powerplay was the best time to bat and Quinney recognised that and played a brilliant knock. Yeah really valuable for Livingstone to get some match time. He has made peace with the fact that he might not be facing too many deliveries. Yeah very much in the competition. We played really well today but couldn't quite get over the line but looking forward to the next match."

The United States of America will face the West Indies in the next match of the 2024 T20 World Cup at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, later today.
