Team India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy's father Mutyalu Reddy recently shared his experience of meeting batting legend Sunil Gavaskar. Mutyalu interacted with the former captain during the ongoing Boxing Day Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 between India and Australia in Melbourne.
Mutyalu said he was overwhelmed to see Gavaskar and that it felt like he had seen God. Nitish's father touched the cricketer-turned-commentator's feet to seek his blessings.
Sharing the experience of his interaction with Gavaskar, here's what Mutyalu wrote in his article for The Indian Express:
"We know who we are and where we come from. I come from a small town; no one knows my name if I leave my small region. But today in Australia, people are asking for selfies, I cannot explain how happy and proud I am. And when I saw Sunil Gavaskar the day after my son hit that hundred, I just couldn’t control myself. I had to do proper namaskaram, touch his feet, and seek his blessings."
"Gavaskar is like the God of cricket. Be it Sachin Tendulkar or Gavaskar or MSK Prasad or Rahul Dravid, everyone sees them like god. The moment I saw him, it felt like I had seen God, so I asked for his blessings. I touched his feet and asked for the blessings; even if my son was here, I would have asked him to touch his feet. When he used to hit a boundary, I used to clap and now today talking about my son, he had tears in his eyes! I broke down," he added.
Nitish Kumar Reddy stole the show with his batting exploits in the ongoing Boxing Day Test. The 21-year-old notched up his maiden Test century, scoring 114 runs off 189 balls in India's first innings.
"I want to see more 100s from him" - Sunil Gavaskar's message to Nitish Kumar Reddy's father
Mutyalu Reddy added that Sunil Gavaskar praised Nitish Kumar Reddy during their conversation. He disclosed that the legendary batter wanted to see his son score more such centuries in the future.
Mutyalu wrote in the aforementioned column:
"Gavaskar sir said, 'You have given a good boy to Indian cricket; he is playing well and has the stability to play in all the formats. And I want to see more 100s from him."
Nitish Kumar Reddy has showcased wonderful batting form in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He is India's second-highest run-getter in the series, amassing 293 runs across six innings at an average of 58.60.
