Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan arrested in Islamabad – All you need to know

Imran Khan, former Pakistan captain and Prime Minister, was arrested inside Islamabad High Court premises ahead of his two hearings on Tuesday, May 9.

The 70-year-old was taken into custody from court premises by paramilitary forces under the Al-Qadir Trust case. The cricketer-turned-politician has been accused of corruption practices under Section 9(a) of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999.

The development came days after the former PM accused spy agency ISI Gen Faisal Naseer of orchestrating plans to murder him.

In a statement, Islamabad police said as quoted by Pakistan’s leading website Dawn:

“Imran had been arrested in relation to the case which alleges that the PTI chief and his wife obtained billions of rupees from a real estate firm for legalizing a laundered amount of Rs50 billion that was identified and returned to the country by the UK during the previous PTI government.”

As per Interior Minister that the PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) leader failed to appear before the court despite several notices. In a tweet post, he wrote:

“The arrest has been conducted by the National Accountability Bureau for causing losses to the national treasury.”

The defense lawyer has said that Imran Khan was hit in the head and leg and tortured during his arrest. Amid protests across Pakistan, a six-member committee headed by Shah Mahmood Qureshi would determine the next course of action. Meanwhile, Section 144 has been imposed in Islamabad to keep the law and order under control.
