Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has sustained a suspected low-grade hamstring strain during the ongoing third T20I against Pakistan in Hobart on Monday, November 18. The 36-year-old walked off the field at the end of the 13th over of the first innings and was later spotted in the dugout in a tracksuit.
During the fourth delivery of the 13th over, Maxwell had run across at short midwicket and attempted a direct hit at the stumps. However, he seemed to have done some damage during that effort, and was seen clutching at his hamstring.
The commentators deliberated on air whether Maxwell was suffering from cramps or did he tweaked his hamstring while running for the ball. The latter proved to be right as Maxwell looked uncomfortable while clutching his hamstring, and hobbling about, before walking off the field to be assessed by the medical staff.
"Glenn has sustained a suspected low-grade hamstring strain. He may bat if required," Cricket Australia released a statement on social media.
With sufficient bowling options in the side, Maxwell was not required to bowl but was at his electric best in the field during his time out in the middle.
Pakistan were placed at 92/5 when Maxwell left the field, and further collapsed to be bowled out for 118 runs to risk a potential 3-0 whitewash in the T20I series. Excluding Maxwell, Australia boasts six batters quite capable of batting, and with a meagre target in not-so-threatening conditions, it is unlikely that he will be required to come into bat.
Glenn Maxwell will be hoping to be fully fit by the time 2024-25 BBL kickstarts
The all-rounder, who also leads the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL), might be in a tight race against time to be fit for the upcoming season.
The Stars' campaign is scheduled to begin on December 15 with a clash against the Perth Scorchers away from home.
