“I treat them like family, like brothers” - Rohit Sharma opens up on what it takes to be a captain and lead a team

Indian captain Rohit Sharma said that he treats players like family when asked about how he feels about leading a team. The Indian opener has been enjoying his time off the field after leading the Men in Blue to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA.

Rohit was recently spotted during a Wimbledon match. Meanwhile, he is currently in the USA, taking part in several events. In a recent interview with the Aldar Experts Podcast, the Mumbai cricketer was questioned about his leadership abilities and what it's like to be a captain.

Rohit replied:

"For a leader, I think it’s important try and lead from the front, set an example for rest of your colleagues, your teammates. And for me it’s always been important that I’ve always carried myself in a way where I try and set an example for my colleagues."

"It is just not about what you do on the field, it is also about what you do off the field as well. I treat them like family, like friends, because as much as you’re part of this team, they share the equal responsibility and equal share in the team to be part of that team. So you got to make them feel homely, you have got to make them feel that you’re wanted here," he added.

Rohit Sharma became the second Indian captain to win a T20 World Cup after MS Dhoni when the Men in Blue defeated South Africa in the final by seven runs on June 29 in Barbados.

"You will be seeing me play for a while" - Rohit Sharma on talks surrounding his retirement

Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20Is after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. Since then, the talk has been around his retirement from other formats of games as well.

He recently put an end to those rumors by declaring at an event in the USA that he would play for a few more years. The Indian skipper added that he is not thinking too far ahead and that his attention focuses mainly on the present.

The Indian opener said (via Journalist Vimal Kumar’s X handle):

"I just said it. I don't do that far ahead. So clearly, you will be seeing me play for a while."

This comes after BCCI secretary Jay Shah declared that Rohit will captain the Indian team in the World Test Championship and Champions Trophy next year.
