Samoa and Vanuatu squared off in the 5th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional East Asia-Pacific Qualifier A 2024 at Apia’s Faleata Oval No. 2 on Tuesday (August 20). Cook Islands and Fiji met in the following game.

Samoa registered their second win over Vanuatu and moved from second to first spot with a net run rate of +1.513.

Meanwhile, Cook Islands dropped to the second position after a massive 104-run loss against Fiji. They have four points and a negative NRR of -0.824.

Vanuatu and Fiji are ranked third and fourth, respectively, with two points each. Vanuatu suffered their second loss in the previous game while Fiji secured their first win against Cook Islands.


Darius Visser’s century propels Samoa to the top; Apete Sokovagone’s fifty guides Fiji to maiden victory

Samoa batted first and posted a challenging 175-run target thanks to Darius Visser 132 from 62 balls, including six fours and 14 sixes. Captain Caleb Jasmat scored 16 off 21 with one four while the rest were dismissed in single digits. Tim Cutler chipped in with three wickets while Darren Wotu and Nalin Nipiko took two wickets each for Vanuatu.

In reply, Vanuatu opener Nalin Nipiko top-scored and smashed an excellent 52-ball 73-run knock with six fours. Joshua Rasu (23), Andrew Mansale (22) and Cutler scored 21 while the remaining were restricted to 164/9, resulting in a 10-run loss.

Douglas Finau claimed a three-wicket haul while Daniel Burgess took two wickets and the rest took one wicket each except Solomon Nash.

In the following game, Fiji posted a 174-run target for seven wickets. Apete Sokovagone led the batting unit with 62 off 37 followed by Peni Vuniwaqa (30) and Metuisela Beitaki (28). Oscar Taylor scalped three wickets for Cook Islands while Jared Tutty took two and Cory Dickson picked up one.

In response, Fiji bowled out Cook Islands to 69/9. The tail-ending batter Andrew Samuels scored 11 while the rest of the lineup was dismissed in under 10 runs.

Peni Dakainivanua was the wrecker-in-chief for Fiji with a three-wicket haul. Joeli Moala and Sunia Yalimaiwai bagged two wickets while Siteri Tabuisulu secured one.
