India have returned to the number one position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points table after an emphatic victory against Australia in Perth at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) first Test. The Jasprit Bumrah-led Indian team crushed the home side by 295 runs, thanks to splendid centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli.
This victory has boosted India's points percentage to 61.11%, helping them regain the top spot in the ICC World Test Championship points table. Defending champions Australia have dropped down to the second spot, with their points percentage reducing to 57.69% because of the defeat.
India, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa are the top five teams in the standings right now. All five nations have a chance of qualifying for the 2025 World Test Championship Final. It will be interesting to see which team makes it to the summit clash.
The second Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series will begin on December 6. Captain Rohit Sharma has joined the Indian team in Australia, and he will be available for selection in the second Test.
West Indies may rise to 8th position in ICC World Test Championship points table soon
Another WTC series is currently underway in the Caribbean, where West Indies are up against Bangladesh. Both teams have been eliminated from the race to the final, but they need to win this series to avoid a bottom-place finish in the standings.
Bangladesh are eighth in the points table at the moment, but if they lose the ongoing Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, they will slip to the last position.
At stumps on Day 3, Bangladesh trail by 181 runs in the first innings, with only one wicket in hand. The fourth day's play will begin at 7.30pm IST in North Sound. West Indies are the favorites to win the first Test match.
