The three-match Test series between Pakistan and England commenced on Monday (October 7) at the Multan Cricket Stadium. The host team captain, Shan Masood, won the toss and opted to bat first on a flat surface. The decision benefitted his side as they notched up 328 runs for the loss of four wickets at stumps on Day 1.

Pacer Gus Atkinson gave England a good start with the new ball by dismissing Pakistan opener Saim Ayub (4) in the fourth over. It was the only positive for the visitors in the first two sessions as Shan Masood (151) and Abdullah Shafique (102) put on a marathon 253-run stand for the second wicket to drive the contest away from them. Masood played aggressively and shifted the pressure onto the bowlers consistently, while Shafique played ideal foil with a sensible knock.

England made a comeback in the last session by dismissing the duo in quick succession. Saud Shakeel (35*) and Babar Azam (30) then stitched together a 61-run partnership to take Pakistan ahead, but the latter's dismissal at the stroke of stumps gave England a massive breakthrough after a long day.

Fans enjoyed the action that transpired on Day 1 of the first Test between England and Pakistan. They expressed their reactions by sharing memes on social media platforms. Here are some of the best memes:

"Feeling very happy as my team is in a good position"- Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique after century on Day 1 of 1st Test vs England 2024

Speaking after stumps on Day 1, Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique expressed delight on scoring a century to help his side dominate the proceedings with the bat in the first innings.

Reflecting on his knock, the 24-year-old batter said to the host broadcaster (via Times of India):

"Feeling very happy as my team is in a good position. It's a next level feeling. (On low scores coming into this match) It happens in cricket, you can't score all the time. It's a very difficult game to be honest. I always focus on my process."

Abdullah continued:

"When a senior batter like Shan Masood is playing with you, it's always a learning curve. It's hard here in Multan. We had a 4-5 days training camp here. Cramps are part of the game especially in these conditions. We are good now."
