Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has criticized the visiting team's batting performance after they lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 series in and against Australia. The Men in Yellow won the five-Test series 3-1 to regain the trophy after 10 years (2014-15).
Indian batters failed to perform to their potential, which was one of the key reasons for the visitors' loss. They scored over 200 runs in an innings only thrice in the series. Given their poor batting display, Australia were able to dominate and eventually win the series.
Talking to India Today, Sourav Ganguly acknowledged that Team India did not bat well. He added that a team cannot win Test matches if they do not score over 350 runs.
“We did not bat well; we have to bat well in Test cricket. If you do not bat well, you will not win Test matches. If you score 170, 180, you cannot win Test matches. You have to score 350-400," Ganguly said.
However, the former left-handed batter did not target any player in particular. He criticized the entire team for the dismal batting performances.
“No one can be blamed. Everyone has to score runs," he added.
Sourav Ganguly backs Indian batter to overcome his problem
Veteran batter Virat Kohli struggled to perform to the best of his abilities in the recently concluded BGT 2024-25 series Down Under. He managed just 190 runs from nine innings, 100 of which came from his century in Perth.
As a bigger matter of concern, Kohli was repeatedly dismissed by the outside-the-off-stump delivery, which continues to haunt him. His mode of getting out time and again has left everyone perplexed. Sourav Ganguly also said he does not understand why the 36-year-old has been unable to overcome the issue.
However, he backed Virat Kohli, believing he would eventually find a solution.
“I don’t understand. He is such a great player. But I am sure he will overcome this problem," Ganguly said in the same interview.
