Ravichandran Ashwin took everyone by surprise after announcing his retirement from international cricket mid-way through the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 series. The big news came after the play ended on the fifth and final day (December 18) of the third Test at The Gabba, which ended in a draw.
As Ashwin bid goodbye to international cricket, congratulatory messages and wishes poured in from several of his teammates, former cricketers, and fans across various platforms.
However, as he pulled the curtains on a glorious international career, his daughter made an adorable farewell poster, a picture of which the now-former International cricketer posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
"Thank You, AshNa You Have The Streets" - the handmade poster read, with a heart symbol at the end. Ashwin shared a picture of his daughter holding the poster via a tweet on X.
Ashwin returned to Chennai, India, after announcing his retirement and did not stay back in Australia with the Indian team for the remainder of the series. Upon his return, he received a warm welcome from his family, friends, and neighbors not just at the airport but also at his residence in Chennai.
Should R Ashwin have retired after playing the final two Tests of the BGT 2024-25 series?
R Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket after the third BGT 2024-25 Test at The Gabba ended in a draw. India will play two more games in the five-match Test series in Melbourne and Sydney.
While some argue that Ashwin timed his retirement perfectly and that it was probably the right time for him to step away, many were also of the opinion that the all-rounder could have delayed the decision and played the final two Tests of the series.
With the series drawn 1-1 and two games to go, Ashwin could have proved to be effective, particularly in Sydney where spin has been a traditional strength for bowlers. However, he is not the only Indian to have announced retirement mid-way through a series as there are other players who have done so in the past as well.
