Australian middle-order batter Travis Head has shared a few pictures on his official Instagram handle after his unique wicket celebration on Day 5 of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). One of the three pictures entailed him dipping his finger in a glass full of ice.
The finger celebration came when the South Australian dismissed Rishabh Pant with a long hop, opening up the game for the home side. However, Head's gesture prompted backlash from Indian fans and experts, with some terming it 'vulgar and obscene.' Former Indian opener Navjot Singh Sidhu went to the extent of demanding punishment for the 30-year-old for insulting 1.5 billion Indians.
Meanwhile, the left-hander took to the social media platform and wrote:
"What a week, Had it all… Put it on ice and go again."
At the post-match presser, Australia captain Pat Cummins clarified that Travis Head's celebration denoted that he wanted to put his finger in ice after bowling and that it's a running joke within the team.
Travis Head is the leading run-getter in the series despite failing in the BGT 2024-25 Boxing Day Test
Meanwhile, the southpaw remains the leading run-getter in the ongoing five-Test series against India despite managing only a run in Melbourne across two innings. His 410 runs in the series so far have come after slamming 140 in Adelaide and 152 in Brisbane to set up the series for the hosts.
Despite the left-hander's failure in Melbourne, Australia outclassed India to take a 2-1 lead heading into the final Test in Sydney, starting on January 3, 2025.
The fourth contest came down to the final session at the MCG when Cummins' men forced a collapse to pick up India's seven wickets after a wicketless second session. Cummins also received the Player of the Match award for his six wickets and 49 and 41 with the bat in two innings.
