India go 1-0 up after defeating Bangladesh by 280 runs in Chennai
Meanwhile, India began the series on a winning note, defeating Bangladesh by a huge margin of 280 runs in the first Test match at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, September 22. Ravichandran Ashwin's all-round exploits at his home ground ensured he was adjudged the Player of the Match.
Despite reeling at 144-6 at one stage, India posted 376 runs in their first innings after being put into bat by Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto on Day 1. Apart from the valuable contributions by Yashavi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant, a crucial 199-run seventh-wicket partnership between centurion Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took the hosts to a respectable first-innings total. In reply, Bangladesh were bowled out for just 149 runs, thereby handing India a 227-run first-innings lead.
Powered by centuries from comeback man Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma's men extended their lead further to 514 runs before declaring their second innings at 287-4. Chasing a mammoth 515 runs for the victory, the visitors fell short of the target, as they lost all their wickets for 234 runs.
