The Rajasthan Royals (RR) secured a last-over win against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their final league stage encounter of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL). They won by four wickets at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala on Friday, May 19.

PBKS were off to a shaky start after being put into bat first. The hosts were reduced to 48-3 inside the powerplay and soon found themselves at 50-4. Jitesh Sharma (44) and Sam Curran (49*) put on a splendid counterattacking display to bring them back into the contest.

Poor bowling choices by RR coupled with dismal fielding in the death overs allowed PBKS to rack up 46 runs in the final two overs. They ended up with a mammoth score of 187-5 in the first innings.

In the chase, Rajasthan opener Jos Buttler recorded the fifth duck of his campaign, creating a new unwanted record in the competition's history. Yashasvi Jaiswal (50) anchored the run chase, while Devdutt Padikkal (51) profited from batting higher up the order, recording a solid half-century.

Skipper Sanju Samson (2) was dismissed early, leaving RR at a precarious position at 90-3 after 11 overs. Jaiswal too departed after reaching the 50-run mark in the 15th over.

Shimron Hetmyer then took RR close to the target with a quickfire 46 runs off 27 deliveries. But he was dismissed in the penultimate over and could not finish the chase off. Dhruv Jurel maintained his composure to get RR over the finishing line with a couple of balls to spare.
