Former England captain Michael Vaughan shared a sarcastic post on social media following the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia in Sydney on Sunday, January 5. Vaughan wrote that the modern-day Tests are three-day games after the BGT series finale ended within three days with Australia winning the game by six wickets.
Vaughan wrote on X:
“Huge apologies to all those offended with me saying the modern game is a 4 day product .. I accept I got it wrong .. it’s a 3 day product .”
Vaughan had recently advocated for a four-day Test to attract a larger audience since the results of most games are achieved within three to four days. The 50-year-old told SEN Cricket (via The Times of India):
"It'd start on a Thursday and finish on a Sunday. It would be easy for everyone to understand that Test cricket starts every Thursday and finishes on a Sunday... if it makes it to Sunday."
“They’re playing a brand of cricket which is pretty much to try and win as quick as they possibly can and put the opposition under pressure. We've got players that are incredibly entertaining now. Four-day cricket would be easier to schedule. The administrators around the world need to seriously consider if it’s time to go from five days to four," he added.
“There would be hell” – Sunil Gavaskar slams Sydney pitch as 34 wickets fall within 3 days in 5th BGT 2-24-25 Test
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar slammed the pitch in Sydney after 15 wickets fell on Day 1. The cricketer-turned-commentator told ABC Sport (via Hindustan Times):
“Former Australian and English cricketers are all the time talking about Indian pitches and conditions. We are not moaners. We are not whingers. You'll never find us complaining. But 15 wickets in a day in India, man, there would be hell.”
“We had Glenn McGrath saying he'd never seen so much grass. Did you hear any former India cricketer moan about the pitch?” he added.
Australia won the five-match series 3-1 to clinch the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
