Yashasvi Jaiswal got India off to a fantastic start with a breezy knock of 40 off just 21 balls in the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Saturday, July 27. The southpaw smashed five boundaries and two sixes in his explosive cameo.
The Men in Blue were committed to playing an ultra-aggressive brand of cricket and that's exactly what Jaiswal delivered in his enterprizing knock. While he got dismissed just short of his half-century, he did have the impact that the visitors would have wanted from him.
Fans on X (formerly Twitter) were thrilled to see Yashasvi Jaiswal take the baton into the new era of Indian cricket. This is the first T20I series after openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from T20Is post the T20 World Cup triumph.
One user wrote:
"Ha, I'm loving this. Jaiswal is doing to Sri Lanka what Jayasuriya did to India in Delhi in 1996. I remember being shellshocked then, traumatized."
"Jaiswal inside out over the off-side could become his trademark in time to come. Just makes it look so easy! #SLvIND", wrote another user.
Another user added:
"Yashasvi Jaiswal has told the world that he is here to stay with his selfless and intent machine game. Impact matters not milestones.!!! #SLvsIND"

Sri Lanka claw their way back after Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill's cameos
Sri Lanka won the toss and asked India to bat first in Pallekele. However, the hosts were behind the 8-ball in the powerplay, thanks to the opening partnership between Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. The duo stayed true to the ultra-aggressive mindset and added 74 runs for the first wicket.
The hosts then got back into the game by dismissing both the set batters on back-to-back deliveries. At the time of writing, India were 122/2 after 11 overs with captain Suryakumar Yadav well set on 38*.
