Mumbai batter Prithvi Shaw went unsold at the IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Monday, November 25. The right-handed batter had registered himself for INR 75 lakh.
The effect came after Prithvi Shaw underwent two consecutive below-par seasons with the Delhi Capitals. He scored 106 and 198 in eight games apiece with a solitary half-century in 2023 and 2024 seasons. The Delhi-based franchise had last bought him for INR 7.5 crore.
Overall, he has 1892 runs in 79 matches with a strike rate of 147.46, including 14 half-centuries in the tournament. Fans on X were disappointed to witness the downfall of Shaw. One user wrote:
"Shaw unsold, kya the aur kya hogye aap, Prithvi bhai (What were you and what have you become?). Come back stronger."
Another user wrote:
"Sad to see the downfall, once termed as future but now it has been a sad story of Indian cricket."
A third user added:
"Next Sachin "Prithvi Shaw" Unsold in 2025 ipl Mega auction."

Mumbai recently dropped Prithvi Shaw from squad due to fitness and disciplinary issues in Ranji Trophy
Mumbai had recently dropped Prithvi Shaw from their squad due to fitness and disciplinary issues in the ongoing 2024-25 Ranji Trophy. An official said to PTI (via ESPNcricinfo):
"You have to look at his fitness and his running when he is on the field. The MCA has a rich history and there cannot be exceptions for a certain player."
Shaw, however, soon made his comeback in the Mumbai squad. Last year, he was involved in a pub brawl incident with an influencer but was later proven not guilty by Mumbai police.
Former India head coach Greg Chappell has suggested Shaw start afresh instead of focusing on his past failures. He said (via ESPNcricinfo):
"The past doesn't define you, Prithvi. It's what you do from here that matters. You're still in your prime, with so many years ahead to make your mark."
"The door back to the Indian team is open if you're willing to walk through it, but it takes a commitment to growth and change," he added.
Prithvi Shaw was compared with Sachin Tendulkar following his international debut but soon faded. He managed five Tests, six ODIs and one T20I.
Shaw is currently playing for Mumbai in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy. He might join as a replacement if somebody gets injured during IPL 2025. Only Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have the purse to buy Shaw as a later addition for the upcoming season.
