The second Test between South Africa and Pakistan began on Friday (January 3) at the Newlands in Cape Town. The hosts won the first Test of the two-match series in Centurion last week. They consequently booked their spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final, which will be played at the Lord's in June.
Proteas captain Temba Bavuma won the toss in the second Test and opted to bat first. Aiden Markram (17), Wiaan Mulder (5), and Tristan Stubbs (0) departed without scoring much as South Africa found themselves at 72/3 in the first session.
Ryan Rickelton (176*) and Temba Bavuma (106) stitched a 235-run partnership for the fourth wicket to change the complexion of the game and put their side ahead. Salman Agha eventually separated them by dismissing Bavuma during the fag end of the day to give some respite to Pakistan after a hard toil. David Bedingham (4*) and Rickelton remained unbeaten at the crease as South Africa reached 316/4 at stumps on day 1.
Fans enjoyed the intriguing action that unfolded on the first day of the second Test between the two teams. They expressed their reactions by sharing memes on Instagram and X (formerly known as Twitter). One of the memes about Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton's partnership read:
"Kya kiye, Koot diye" (What did you do, you ruined it)

"It's been a good day for us"- South Africa opener Ryan Rickelton after his century on day 1 of the 2nd Test vs Pakistan 2025
After stumps on Day 1, South African opening batter Ryan Rickelton reflected on his knock and his team's performance, saying: (via Cricbuzz)
"To come back from the last Test against Pakistan where I felt a bit uneasy to get a hundred let alone 170 today is special for me. I practise a lot against the new ball always, so it's not something I am shy of and I like the challenge as well. There's no denying it, it's a good wicket, it's going to turn as the game goes on. I just tried to keep simple. Opening the batting was mentally a different challenge but I just tried to keep it simple, stand still, play straight."
He added:
"That was my game-plan, to extend it for long periods of time was a bonus. It's been a good day for us. Temba was superb as well. We need to really maximise this first innings and try to get as many as we can before Kesh and the seamers come into the game."
